In May 2024, the Vatican introduced new rules for how the Church evaluates supernatural claims, such as visions or miracles. These replace the older 1978 rules and aim to bring more clarity and consistency. Now, only the Vatican can officially declare whether something is truly supernatural. However, a new category called "nihil obstat" (Latin for “no objection”) allows the Church to recognize positive spiritual outcomes from a site—even if the supernatural nature hasn’t been confirmed. This allows pilgrimages and devotions to continue under Church guidance.
In September 2024, the Vatican officially acknowledged the positive spiritual experiences people have at Medjugorje, granting it a "nihil obstat". This means Catholics are welcome to visit, pray, and participate in devotions there, even though the Church has not made a final ruling on whether the Virgin Mary’s reported appearances are authentic. The focus is on encouraging the spiritual good that comes from the site without declaring it a proven miracle.
